This course gives you the permission to take care of yourself by learning the skills to manage stress and optimize wellbeing.

About this course

Everyone experiences adversity and stress at some level, whether it’s the pressure to perform in school or work, relationship problems, financial difficulties, or simply the number of tasks to do in a short period of time. All stress isn’t bad, but chronic stress can take its toll on our minds, bodies, and behavior. Research has shown that people can learn and use specific resilience skills (such as optimistic thinking, relaxation strategies, choosing one’s attention) and positive routines (good sleep, scheduling in fun, and so on) in order to better manage stress, bounce back quicker after a setback, be more effective in their academic and vocational pursuits, develop stronger relationships with others, be physically and mentally healthy, and be satisfied with their lives overall. In short, resilience is ordinary magic and can be learned. It does not necessarily mean that you have to be born resilient or get lucky in life.

The purpose of this course is to teach individuals the science behind becoming a resilient person. Stated simply, resilience is the ability to survive and thrive. Resiliency is not only about your ability to positively adapt in the face of adverse or challenging circumstances (that is, survive), but it is also about learning the positive skills, strategies and routines that enable you to live a happy, fulfilling, and meaningful life (in other words, thrive). This course gives you the permission to take care of yourself in order to effectively manage life stressors and do what matters most in life.

By the end of this course, you will have learned about the knowledge and skills that you can apply in your life now and in the future to be a resilient person.

Course goal:

The goal for this course is to give you permission to take care of yourself and empower you to be a resilient person. A resilient person is someone who:

purposely strives to be as mentally and psychically healthy as possible,

possesses the confidence to effectively cope with and manage stressful situations,

is compassionate towards self and others,

demonstrates grit or perseverance even in the face of adversity, and

focuses on the positive and fulfilling aspects of life.

you will be able to:

Describe why ‘functioning from the inside out’ is critical to becoming a resilient, effective person

Explain the benefits of resilience and how the specific skills translate into optimizing social-emotional wellbeing and doing what matters most in life

Directly practice a variety of resilience skills in different aspects of your life, including but not limited to:

Mindfulness practices

Strategies to manage intense emotions

Activities that induce positive emotions

Clarifying important personal values (that is, what matters most) and committing to behaving consistent with them

Making health lifestyle choices that are cheap and readily available, yet promote well-being

Edith Cowan University Scholarship Hospitality for International Students in Australia

0

Dr Edmund Goh has secured a $50,000 International Education Innovation Grant from StudyPerth to help increase international hospitality students’ employment opportunities in hospitality.

The project is targeted at 100 international hospitality/tourism students from various institutions across Western Australia who are members of StudyPerth. The purpose is to fast-track their job readiness and enter the hospitality industry immediately to address the urgent hospitality workforce shortage.

“This is a meaningful project to ensuring hospitality businesses can access skilled workers in the post pandemic recovery stage is critical to the national economy and survival of the hospitality sector,” says CEO of StudyPerth Phil Payne.

This project will involve 3 key hospitality industry partners: ACCOR Hotels, Australia Hotel Association WA, Australia Professional Skills Institute, and StudyPerth to provide the applied certifications and training. The 100 international hospitality students will be recruited from 10 institutions who offer hospitality and tourism programs including: Australian Professional Skills Institute, Edith Cowan College, Edith Cowan University, Kaplan Business School, Keystone College of Business Technology, Kingston International College, Murdoch University, SERO Institute, Stanley College, and West Australian Institute of Further Studies.

The successful 100 students will receive an applied learning experience with industry partner, ACCOR Hotels from September to December 2021. The key objective is to increase employability readiness and provide university hospitality international students with an applied working experience.

“The best way to learn about the hospitality industry is to immerse yourself through an authentic applied learning experience to gain a better understanding of hotel day-to-day operations,” says Nathan Frost, Area General Manager Operations, ACCOR WA.

All training expenses will be covered by the grant such as meals, uniforms, training materials and venue hire. During this period, students will work across key hotel departments (Front Office, Housekeeping, and Food & Beverage) to gain an in-depth knowledge about hotel operations.

Are you a student and do you want to get involved?

If you are an international student enrolled in hospitality or tourism at any of the above institutions, passionate about hospitality, and interested in jumpstarting your hospitality career, please send an expression of interest, a CV, and a 300 words statement as to why you should be selected for this learning experience, why are you passionate about working in hospitality, and what do you expect to learn out of this experience.
