The University of Kigali is looking for a professional and qualified Electrician

Position Overview:

The University of Kigali (UoK) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of electrician. The successful candidate will maintain, install, and repair electrical systems across campuses of the University, ensuring safe power for buildings, laboratories, classrooms, student residences and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.



Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Electrical Maintenance: The selected applicant will perform routine inspection and repair of wiring, lighting circuits, transformers, and switchgear.
  • Installation & Upgrades: The selected applicant will install new lighting systems, power sockets, and electrical equipment for campus renovations or new buildings.
  • Safety & Compliance: The selected applicant willensure all electrical works comply with safety regulations (e.g., EICRs, building codes).
  • Troubleshooting: The selected applicant will diagnose and repair electrical faults, including fire alarms, security systems, and emergency lighting.
  • Project Work: The selected applicant will plan and execute small to medium-scale electrical projects, such as installing of new circuits or upgrading infrastructure.
  • Documentation: The selected applicant shall maintain all records of maintenance work using computerized management systems



Key Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Electrical Engineering or its equivalent; Electro-mechanical Engineering or its equivalent obtained from a recognized University
  • Licensing: A valid state or regional electrician’s license.
  • Safety Training: Certified in safety procedures, such as OSHA 10/30 or equivalent, and familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) or local equivalent.
  • Specialized Areas: Certifications to work at heights, in confined spaces, or with specific high-voltage equipment.
  • Experience: Previous experience in industrial or commercial settings, preferably in higher education or large residential complexes. Minimum of 5 years of experience working in industrial or commercial environments.
  • Maintenance & Repair: Proven experience with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing large electrical systems, including 3-phase power distribution, lighting systems, and motor controls.
  • Emergency Response: Experience in emergency response to urgent repairs and the ability to work under pressure
  • Safety Focus: Knowledge of safety procedures (e.g., lockout/tagout) and high voltage equipment.
