Job Purpose

The role of Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer is to increase the external footprint and visibility of International Alert Rwanda by maximizing the dissemination, coverage, and impact of our work, and by promoting our programs, initiatives, events and activities among policy makers, donors, the media, and the public.

The postholder provides an oversight of internal and external communication processes and products. S/He prepares a wide range of written materials, presentations, and possibly audio-visual material for local and international audiences, in line with ethical and branding guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drafts, edits and formats quarterly updates and annual reports in English, French and Kinyarwanda and assures that these reports are developed, printed and distributed on time; uses Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Publisher and other relevant software to create reports, brochures, videos, logos, and so on in collaboration with the project Managers.
  • Plan and execute diverse and complex events.
  •  Plan and implement public outreach efforts, including public speaking appearances, press briefings and special events.
  •  Create compelling case studies and stories highlighting International Alert Rwanda collaboration with Local NGO and CSOs partners, and Rwandan Government and communities.
  • Develop and disseminate via any/ all relevant channels compelling content regarding International Alert Rwanda work with their communities.
  • Design and publish annual reports – soft and hard copies – targeting different audiences.
  • Manage multiple projects under tight deadlines with the highest level of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Negotiate, implement, manage, and evaluate media placements
  • Manage content and platforms (on-line, print, radio, etc.) to effectively reach all diverse stakeholder groups: Communities in which we serve, Government of Rwanda, Donors, Local Non-Governmental Organizations/Embassies, Rwandan citizens, Staff, policymakers, influencers, International Alert headquarters to tell the Rwanda country Office story and to satisfy International Alert Strategic Goals.
  • Draft and implement social media campaigns to drive the visibility of International Alert Rwanda and its knowledge products, while growing the online community.
  • Day-to-day management of International Alert Rwanda social media channels.
  • Weekly content development (engaging text mapped to appropriate visuals, blog posts, etc.) for all social media channels and websites, including timely and regular updates.
  • Using video editing and design software to cull engaging excerpts/soundbites from commissioned videos and livestreamed footage.
  • Drafting social media kits for events.
  • Comments section and inbox moderation, and subscriber engagement.
  • Monthly monitoring and reporting to track online performance.
  • Proposing online campaigns to align with events and international days.
  • Stay up to date with digital technology trends.




Travel requirements

The position is based in Kigali city  with  frequent travel to the districts in which we work.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business/Marketing, International Development, or a related field

Minimum three years of demonstrated professional experience in communications, content development, digital content creation/design, and social media.

Tech savvy, awareness of content trends that can engage audiences.

Technical ability to exploit the full capacities of electronic media for assembling, organizing and managing information.

Experience with media and communications, including photography and video production. Ability to deliver a complete and polished product.

Ability to interact professionally with a diverse employee population and with all levels of staff and management.

Willingness to work outside normal working hours (when required) in a time-driven communication cycle

Experience working in a globally oriented organization, ideally in a peacebuilding field and interacting with global/multinational colleagues

Familiar with Google Analytics, AWeber, Mailchimp, WordPress, Photoshop, Illustrator, Vimeo, SlideShare, YouTube, Google Doc, short video editing and streaming software.

Understand the best practices of main social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc

Strong emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

Communicates clearly and cogently in English and Kinyarwanda in writing and speech

Reads French easily, can write informal memos in French, and can sustain a professional conversation in French about strategic and operational aspects of Alert’s work.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

Established and influential communicator with strong profile and networks in the sector.

Fluency in other languages spoken in Greak Lakes region like Swahili.
