Project Description

We are looking for PhD students in the following topics:

  • Advanced miniaturised robotics; Aiming to push forward the frontier of miniaturised robotics in design and principles, including but not limited to acoustic/magnetic manipulation, miniature mobile robots, small soft robotics, soft matter manipulation, and swarm robotics
  • AI in miniaturised robotics; Aiming to advance the functionality and performance of miniaturised robotics by adapting/developing AI methods for miniaturised robotics in topics such as acoustic/magnetic manipulation, miniature soft robotics, soft matter manipulation, and swarm robotics.
  • Insect manipulation robots for insect taxonomy; Aiming to develop miniaturised robots that can autonomously manipulate individual insects to classify all existing insect species. The research will be in cooperation with international experts in AI, bioinformatics, and data science.

The candidate will work in a highly international, dynamic, and pioneering research group, including multidisciplinary collaboration with researchers/professors in different departments of Aalto University and other universities internationally. The positions are immediately available, and the starting date is based on mutual agreement. The salary is based on the university salary scheme.

Application Deadline

The deadline for applications is April 02, 2021

Eligibility Criteria

As a successful applicant, you should be highly motivated in miniaturised robotics research and have a background in one or several related fields: robotics, automation, mechatronics, computer science, microfluidics, microsystems, or associated fields. The required ground may vary depending on the topic you are applying to. Relevant experience in the research group’s activity fields is appreciated.

We expect the applicant to work on both physical miniaturised robots and automation and autonomous software/algorithm, including machine learning, where the main tasks could focus on either physical side of the software/algorithm side, depending on the nature of the work. The applicant is expected to be innovative, thinking out-of-box, multidisciplinary, and hands-on. Experiences in physical devices, physical modelling, machine learning and/or software design are appreciated.

You should have or expected to have an M.Sc. degree in the related field.

In the cover letter, the candidate should specify which topic(s) you are applying for; the candidate is also encouraged to structure the synergies between one’s background/expertise and the preliminary topic(s) listed above or group’s activities, and if applicable, propose a meaningful research topic.
