The Master of Science in Global Urban Health (MSc GUH) at University of Freiburg, is an interdisciplinary, modular course for graduates in the fields of social sciences, medicine, public health, anthropology or similar background who have professional experience in health sciences, environmental health, urban planning / migration or social work. The aim of the course is to convey knowledge, skills and competences concerning the identification and management of risks factors for health in big cities, especially, but not only, in low- and middle income countries. The focus includes the application of appropriate research methods and implementation strategies for the special requirements of areas such as concept development, planning and implementation of health-related interventions. Main topics covered are analysis of environmental health risk factors and socio-economic determinants of health in urban areas, epidemiology and infectious diseases, as well as migration, violence and mental illness within vulnerable groups of the urban population.

The program is based on national and international Global Health and Urban Health concepts and is in line with international strategies such as the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The modules use participatory learning techniques and practical exercises, field trips as well as study tours to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Environmental Program (UNEP) in Geneva, the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI) in Basel and several environmental initiatives in and around the green city of Freiburg.

    Who can apply?

    • Depending on academic level, monthly payments of 850 euros for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates
    • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
    • Travel allowance, unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding

    Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

    • Monthly rent subsidy

Application details

Both Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences offer a number of scholarships for fee-paying students in order to provide excellent international students with high-quality, yet affordable, education. Scholarships are not available for students in tailored degree education provided for a third party.

In addition, Tampere University cooperates with organisations which provide scholarships to specific groups of applicants. Information on all scholarships available can be found below.

Tampere University seeks to recognise high-achieving, motivated students. Tampere University Scholarships Programme is intended for students who are required to pay tuition fees in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes offered in English. Scholarships are merit-based and may be awarded primarily at admission to the most successful applicants. A limited number of scholarships is available annually. Some scholarships may also be earned during studies.

Scholarships available at admission

  • Tampere University tuition fee scholarships cover 100% of the tuition fees for the programme duration. The programme duration is
    • three years for Bachelor’s degrees
    • two years for Master’s degrees
    • five years if the study right is granted for both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree.​​​

    The prerequisite for retaining the Tampere University tuition fee scholarship throughout the programme duration is progressing in studies at the normative pace. In order to retain the full tuition fee scholarship in the following year of studies, the recipient must earn at least 55 credits during the academic year as detailed in the personal study plan. If a scholarship recipient completes 50-54 credits during the academic year, his or her scholarship will be reduced to 50% in the following academic year. If a scholarship recipient completes less than 50 credits during the academic year, he or she will be charged the full tuition fee in the following academic year.

  • Early bird scholarships cover 50% of the tuition fee during the first year of studies. This scholarship is available at admission to all fee-paying students, excluding students who have been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship at admission.Students may take advantage of the early bird scholarship by accepting the offered study place and paying 50% of the tuition fee within two weeks after receiving information on admission. This offer is valid only for the first year of studies.

How to apply

Updated 23.11.2020: In order to take into account minor technical issues and to ensure that each and every one of our applicants can reliably access the scholarship application, we have changed the platform we use for the scholarship application. Due to this, we have also had to make minor changes to the scholarship application process. The below instructions have been updated on this date to reflect these changes. Please read through the updated instructions carefully so you can prepare your application at the correct time.

To be considered for the Tampere University tuition fee scholarship, you must apply for the scholarship as part of your application for admission during the application period for admission. For applicants to Master’s programmes, the application period starts on 9 December 2020 at 8.00 GMT +2 and ends on 13 January 2021 at 15.00 GMT +2. For applicants to Bachelor’s programmes, the application period begins on 7 January 2021 at 8.00 GMT +2 and ends on 20 January 2021 at 15.00 GMT +2.

You will apply for Tampere University Scholarships with the same online application you use to apply for admission at Studyinfo.fi. To apply for a scholarship, you will be asked to describe in writing on the application form the academic qualifications which support your merit-based scholarship application and your motivation for applying for a Tampere University scholarship (max. number of characters 3500). No additional attachments are required for the scholarship application.

All application information you submit in your application for admission at Studyinfo.fi, including your educational documents, is available for the admissions committee evaluating your scholarship application. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic overall assessment in which all application information and educational documents as well as the grounds you have given for your scholarship application are taken into consideration and can be decisive. The scholarship applications are processed by admissions committees in the Faculties and a University scholarship council. The decision on the scholarship will be communicated to you together with information on admission.

The early bird scholarship is available to all fee-paying students without a separate application.

Scholarships available during studies

  • During studies, all fee-paying students are eligible to apply for Tampere University tuition fee scholarships covering 50% of tuition fees. The scholarship is awarded to a fee-paying student who completes at least 60 ECTS credits with a GPA of no less than 3/5 in an academic year. Scholarships are awarded after the first year of studies for one year at a time upon application.
  • Tampere University International Advancement Scholarship rewards fee-paying students for making swift progress in studies. It is available annually for students who pay tuition fee for their studies (either full or partial fee, students who are studying on a 100 % tuition fee scholarship are not eligible.You may be awarded the International Advancement Scholarship if you complete at least 60 ECTS of studies included in your degree within the academic year or graduate from your degree within the target time for completion (three years for a Bachelor’s degree and two years for Master’s). It is a 1500 € scholarship paid to the student in the autumn semester following the academic year in question or upon graduation. It is possible to earn the scholarship more than once during the normative study time for your degree(s). The Tampere University International Advancement Scholarship is available for students who are admitted to Tampere University in 2021 or later.

The total duration of all Tampere University scholarships may not be longer than the target time for the completion of the degree. The target time for the completion of a bachelor’s degree is three academic years. The target time for the completion of a master’s degree is two academic years.

Please note that students studying in the framework of the following programmes with a scholarship are not eligible for the above-mentioned scholarships:

  • the Erasmus Mundus programme
  • the Fulbright – Tampere University Graduate Award programme*


* Applicants for the Fulbright – Tampere University Graduate Award are eligible to apply for a Tampere University scholarship at admission while they wait for the decision on the Fulbright award and should do so if they wish to be considered for the Tampere University scholarship in case they are not awarded the Fulbright – Tampere University Graduate Award.

Planning and/or conducting investigations involving the engineering feasibility and economic justification of water storage development, flood control, and drainage projects; river flood control investigations; Work closely with Dam Specialist, River Flood Specialist and Geotechnical Specialist on the design and cost estimation of water channels, dykes, dams, weirs, ponds and other hydraulic structures; Supervise detailed studies in connection with, and assist with, the preparation of plans and specifications for various hydraulic projects and structures;

Conduct and incorporate hydraulic analysis or determination of the flood hydraulics and loads on all flood control and management infrastructures; Assess, differentiate and specify the different damage and failure mechanisms in the technical guidelines for any related flood control and water storage infrastructures; Develop and incorporate the methodology of hydraulics and damage potential assessment and the possible need for protection measures; Establish safety levels and threshold values per damage mechanism on the flood structures related to the hydraulic conditions and damage potential (or accepted damage);

Make costs analysis for the different options of river bank protection, road slope protection costs of flow through structures (bridges, ponds, dyke and culverts etc) and quantify the options in the integrated approach; Assess dimensions of flow though openings (bridges and culverts) and their interference with the natural hydraulics of the floodplain in terms of extent (flooded area), depth and duration;

Work closely with Hydraulic/Flood Modeling Specialist from KFH Department on the analysis and development of technically complex hydrologic and hydraulic computer models for site
– specific floodplain assessments; Study and analyze the details involved in the survey reports and any other data that has the geological or topographical details and to pay attention to the details in the blue prints, maps, and other related drawings; Review the feasibility studies, and proposed detailed engineering designs(including specifications, drawings, and detailed cost estimates) for flood control management infrastructures; Prepare clear and concise engineering reports;

Prepare cost estimates that would include the cost of the equipment, material as well as the labor cost that is required to complete the project within the given deadline; Be involved in designing structures and advise the subordinate members regarding any changes that need to be made and communicate it to the senior personnel;

Identify the technical or any other issues and preparing tender documents for construction and reviewing technical submissions; Liaising with various agencies and individuals, including local authorities, government agencies, clients, contractors, residents, suppliers, technical experts, and consultants;

Assess the potential dam sites identified under Water Resources Master Plan, Study and produce a table of contour area and its volume relationship at the contour intervals;

Coordinate on the development of the Dam Safety Program and report on annual bases the previous year’s achievements, challenges and ongoing improvements needed in dam development;

Develop a framework for dams monitoring;

Design national system for dams safety; Develop manuals/guidelines for dams inspection,

Carry out regular surveillance and monitoring of the status and safety of dams;

Produce dams status reports; Review of all dam related studies;

Lead the research and study of soil to evaluate its suitability for foundations.

He/she will investigate and assess construction sites, conduct lab tests, create designs for structures, supervise construction, write and present reports.

Plan and review the geotechnical design structures for roads, bridges, culverts, embankments, water drainage canals, dam, dykes and other construction projects;

Reviewed and identify issues and potential technical solutions for detail designs of water storage and flood control structures; Supervise the Contractor in the undertakings of soil investigations;

Define and implement preliminary light geotechnical surveys;

Review results and analysis of the geotechnical surveys being carried out for detailed design of water storage and flood control structures;

Review the materials and works specifications for different water storage structures; Coordinate with structural Engineers in the design of dams and other hydraulic structures;

Approve the final Geotechnical detailed design report for all hydraulic structures to be constructed;

Perform geotechnical analysis and study to assess construction site condition.

Plan and supervise geotechnical exploration effectively. Develop proposals and determine cost and schedule for investigations.

Assist Manager in design and evaluation of constructions. Review and approve geotechnical designs developed by outside consultants Review construction design proposals and approve geotechnical aspects.

Look at the risk of geological hazards and making sure any factors affecting engineering works are identified and managed;

Consulting geological maps and aerial photographs to advise on site selection;

Assisting with the design of built structures, using specialized computer software or calculations;

Advising on and testing a range of construction materials including sand, gravel, bricks and clay;

Conduct a preliminary geotechnical analysis of potential dam sites by conducting insitu test; hand Auger and trial pits and standard penetrometer test and some laboratory analysis;

Prepare the Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual progress Report on all project activities to the Division Manager and design the framework for the physical and process monitoring of program activities;

Contribute to the preparation and development of the drainage and flood management in relation to Catchment management by providing technical advice on current and planned drainage and flood control components;

Work closely with Urban Hydrologist, Geotechnical Specialist & Modelers from KFH to incorporate climate adaptation into drainage designs for the flood projections;

Prepare the feasibility study, and proposed detailed engineering designs (including specifications, drawings, and detailed cost estimates) for drainage and flood control management infrastructures;

Identify vulnerable and undersized bridges, culverts, drainage channels, community buildings/assets that need to be upgraded or moved to safer areas;

Assess possible impacts of road development and rehabilitation in the floodplain and cooperate with concerned agencies ;

Calculate the incremental costs of climate adaptation into drainage subprojects; Incorporate climate resilience into specification for flood construction work in collaboration with the Modeling specialist team from KFH Department;

Consult with the urban hydrologist & Hydraulic/Flood Modeling Specialist to estimate drainage capacity and requirement for the flood and inundation modelling;

Help in preparation of bidding documents and bill of quantities and review feasibility and detailed studies;

Work together with concerned agencies and assist them in the designing of drainage, bridge and culver for peak runoff conveyance;

Prepare and review the existing policy, strategy and plans related to water resources and drainages in collaboration with Infrastructure Flood Specialist Team Leader and other Expert;

Preparing mapping network referencing and inventories (i.e. drainage and bridges size, cross sections data for mitigate high peak flow Ensure the development and regular updating of specifications to keep RWB in the forefront of technological improvements and innovation;

Establish the framework and software where in Flood Management and Water Storage Development Division feed in data for the drainage planning and management. The data include; designing, construction, rehabilitation, maintenance etc; Develop Best Practice Guidelines for the Integrated Planning and Design of Economically Sound and Environmentally Friendly Roads and drainage infrastructures to mitigate flood;

Monitor and evaluate overall progress of drainage, bridges, road project on achievement of results and provide feedback to the Division Manager on project strategies and activities;

Suggest strategies to the Project Management for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the project by identifying bottlenecks in completing project activities and developing plans to minimize or eliminate such bottlenecks;

Prepare the Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual progress Report on all project activities to the Division Manager and design the framework for the physical and process monitoring of program activities;

Perform any other tasks assigned by the Supervisors
