YLabs is a leading global design and research organization working to improve health and economic opportunity for young people 10–24 years old. Founded in 2014 at the Harvard Innovation Lab, YLabs partners with young people in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Central America to design, test, and advocate for youth-driven solutions that address key challenges to young people’s health and economic opportunity worldwide. Our team of physicians, designers, economists, developers, public health professionals, and educators bring a unique mix of human-centered design, adolescent health, economic and health outcome evaluation, behavioral science, and implementation know-how to the global problems facing youth.

We have offices in the US and Rwanda, but are currently supporting our teams to work remotely during COVID-19. Once normal work safely resumes, this role will be expected to work out of our Kigali office.

JOB SUMMARY

YLabs is seeking a junior-level or mid-level Communication Designer who is passionate about using communication design to make a difference, working on multiple projects across the globe and growing the internal design capacity at YLabs. You’ll be working at the cutting edge of design for social impact with a team that combines expertise in health, data and design. You’ll be part of our design team in Kigali, Rwanda, working hand-in-hand with our project teams to design visually compelling and technically clear outputs for globally dispersed projects. You’ll also work with the larger design team to develop our organizational branding and communications tools.

This is a full-time position which requires the ability to legally work in Kigali, Rwanda. Due to the pandemic, a majority of our Rwanda-based staff live and work remotely in Kigali. There is no requirement for this role to be based out of Kigali during the pandemic although if you choose to work remotely, it will be necessary to travel to the Kigali office at times.

ABOUT YLABS’ COMPENSATION

YLabs adheres to Project Fair’s principles and standards  to establish equity in pay with the overriding principle of “equal pay for work of equal value” outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals. All salary ranges are based on level within the organization and are competitive to regional and national salary benchmarks, based on the respective office location.

PAY RATE

The pay range for this position is RF 15,000,000 – RF19,875,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

YOU HAVE:

  • 2+ years of experience in graphic design or communication design
  • Strong graphic design skills particularly in layout, presentations, branding and visualization of systems and complex information and structures
  • Strong knowledge of design platforms like Adobe Creative Suite, design techniques, software, data visualization
  • Experience in creating and/or managing brands
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with colleagues, clients, and beneficiaries

DESIRABLE:

  • Expertise in human-centered design / design thinking
  • Experience in print, digital, UX/UI design, data visualization
  • Experience in and enthusiasm for managing interns or junior designers
  • Experience in illustration and drawing concepts
  • Previous experience working on health, education or employment programs
  • Worked or lived in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia or Central America
  • Proficient with basic visual and/or UX/UI design tools to create mid-fidelity mockups
  • Strong interest in working with young people
