The Master of Science in Global Urban Health (MSc GUH) at University of Freiburg, is an interdisciplinary, modular course for graduates in the fields of social sciences, medicine, public health, anthropology or similar background who have professional experience in health sciences, environmental health, urban planning / migration or social work. The aim of the course is to convey knowledge, skills and competences concerning the identification and management of risks factors for health in big cities, especially, but not only, in low- and middle income countries. *Academic year 2020/2021: The program will start on 28. September 2020 in form
of hybrid teaching (classroom sessions and online offers).

The focus includes the application of appropriate research methods and implementation strategies for the special requirements of areas such as concept development, planning and implementation of health-related interventions. Main topics covered are analysis of environmental health risk factors and socio-economic determinants of health in urban areas, epidemiology and infectious diseases, as well as migration, violence and mental illness within vulnerable groups of the urban population.

The program is based on national and international Global Health and Urban Health concepts and is in line with international strategies such as the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The modules use participatory learning techniques and practical exercises, field trips as well as study tours to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Environmental Program (UNEP) in Geneva, the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI) in Basel and several environmental initiatives in and around the green city of Freiburg.

The Master of Science in Global Urban Health will teach you

  • To develop analytical and management skills to meet the challenges of urban health;
  • To identify and quantify biological-psychological-social threats to health and risk factors in urban areas
  • To develop knowledge and skills in the field of prevention,  control,  program development, monitoring and evaluation for improving urban health;
    • To design and conduct research projects in the field of urban health;
    • To make proactive evidence-based decisions and to gain leadership qualities and effective working skills according to the professional background
    • To enhance independent and reflective thinking and inspire an interest for lifelong learning.

    Our Master is also a part of The German Association of Postgraduate Programmes with special Relevance to Developing Countries (AGEP). AGEP standards guarantee that its members maintain a high scientific level and apply modern methods of teaching and research.

    DAAD-EPOS SCHOLARSHIPS

    Who can apply?

    Graduates with at least two years’ professional experience from the following countries: list of eligible countries

    Duration of the funding

    12 to 36 months (dependent on study programme)

    Value

    • Depending on academic level, monthly payments of 850 euros for graduates or 1,200 euros for doctoral candidates
    • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
    • Travel allowance, unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding

    Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

    • Monthly rent subsidy
    • Monthly allowance for accompanying members of family

    Selection

    • Candidates fulfil the necessary academic requirements and can be expected to successfully complete a study programme in Germany (above-average result for first academic exam – top performance third, language skills)
    • Candidates have a Bachelor degree (usually a four-year course) in an appropriate subject
    • Candidates have at least two years’ professional experience
    • Candidates can prove their motivation is development-related and be expected to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of change in their personal and professional environment after their training/scholarship
