Job description
– Reporting to the Head of Department Crop Innovation & Tech. Transfer, the Crop Protection Program Coordinator Senior Research Fellow has the following responsibilities:
– Provide leadership for the identification, assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, impact assessment and reporting processes of crop pests and diseases prevention and management initiatives
– Identify and prioritize researchable problems, and accordingly prepares a proposal to undertake the study
– Develop and disseminate technologies for effective control of the outbreaks of pests and diseases of major crops
– Coordinate and manage strategies leading to progressive reduction of pest and diseases incidences and subsequent eradication
– awareness on safe use and handling of pesticides, as well as effective use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
– Provide technical subject matter assistance to stations and district staff in crop protection strategies
– Produce and disseminate information for awareness creation and sensitization on crop protection materials (posters and fliers)
– Coordinate the Implementing of the national crop protection strategy in line with the following themes: Pest exclusion/ prevention;(1) Pest detection/ Early Warning/ Surveillance; (2) Emergency preparedness and response; (3) Pest management programs
– Establish and maintain effective collaboration with other researchers, locally, regionally and internationally
– Coordinating mobilization of financial resources for research through proposal writing through competitive funding
– Analyze, publish in peer viewed scientific journal, conferences, book chapters, extension material and disseminate research findings
– Establish and maintain effective collaboration with other researchers, locally, regionally and internationally, in area plant protection
– Ensure mentorship for scientists of Plant protection program and technicians under his/her supervision in conception, planning, monitoring and evaluation.
– Ensure and sustain collaboration and exchanges with other Programs within RAB as well as Seed Division in matters of Pest and Disease management
– Participating in developing and implementing the institutional work plan and budget execution of the budget approved, and institutional imihigo and performance contracts
– Ensure the adequate management of resources under his /her responsibilities; prevent audit queries and implementation of Auditor General Recommendations when queries are raised.
– Ensure a good budget execution and implementation of institution performance contracts.
– Conduct regular meeting with the Program staff on progress of implementation of activities
– Compile, edit and submit the quarterly and annual reports on the implementation progress of Plant protection
– Undertake other duties as assigned by the Head of department and other RAB Senior Managers

Fluency in Kinyarwanda, English and/or French. Knowledge of all is an added advantage
Having led the generation of at least one (1) innovation or technology for agriculture development
Having led to the writing and won at least one (1) funded project for agriculture development
Having five (5) publications as first author and seven (7) publications as a co-author in a peer-reviewed journal
Having led or contributed to the production and dissemination of sixteen (16) extension materials including technical guidelines, documentary films, and other extension materials for innovations aiming to increase farmers’ production, productivity and resilience capacitie
Being conversant with national and sector policies and development agenda
Proven experience to work with farmers and industry stakeholders in research and extension
Capacity in project development and resources mobilization
