Location:Â Primarily Butaro Campus and Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital, with frequent travel to Kigali and other teaching sites in Rwanda
Position Overview
The Faculty of Pediatric Surgery will play a key role in advancing UGHE’s mission to deliver equitable, high-quality medical education and surgical care for children. The faculty member will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, clinical pediatric surgical service delivery, research, and global surgery initiatives focused on children’s surgical care.
The Pediatric Surgery faculty member will actively participate in clinical teaching at Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital and affiliated training sites, contribute to curriculum development in pediatric surgery, mentor students and trainees, and support the implementation of the General Surgery Residency Program aligned with COSECSA standards, including strengthening pediatric surgical training exposure.
The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, academically productive, and committed to surgical education, research, and strengthening pediatric surgical capacity in resource-limited settings. The individual must be organized, collaborative, adaptable, and passionate about improving access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care for children.
Responsibilities
Undergraduate Medical Education
- Contribute to curriculum, syllabus, and content development in pediatric surgery across the MBBS/MGHD curriculum.
- Deliver lectures, small group sessions, simulation-based teaching, and bedside clinical instruction.
- Provide clinical supervision to medical students during surgery clerkships, with emphasis on pediatric surgical conditions.
- Participate in student assessment (OSCEs, written exams, workplace-based assessments).
- Supervise and mentor undergraduate research projects.
- Coordinate pediatric surgery teaching activities with visiting and adjunct faculty.
- Collaborate with affiliated hospitals to ensure effective delivery of pediatric surgical education.
- Ensure quality and consistency of clinical teaching across all rotation sites.
- Provide leadership for pediatric surgery modules or thematic blocks as assigned.
- Participate in direct patient care as part of clinical teaching responsibilities.
Postgraduate and Residency Education
- Contribute to implementation of competency-based training aligned with COSECSA standards.
- Ensure quality supervision of residents rotating through pediatric surgery.
- Provide structured clinical supervision in neonatal and pediatric surgical care.
- Participate in WBAs, logbook reviews, case discussions, and operative competency assessments.
- Contribute to exam preparation for COSECSA membership and fellowship examinations.
- Mentor residents in clinical practice, research, leadership, and professionalism.
- Participate in M&M conferences, journal clubs, and academic rounds.
- Support development of simulation-based training for pediatric surgical procedures.
- Contribute to accreditation and quality assurance processes.
- Support development of pediatric surgery training pathways within UGHE programs.
Clinical Service Delivery

Support and scale-up of comprehensive pediatric surgical services at Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital, including:
- Pediatric general surgery and emergency care
- Pediatric Oncologic Surgery
- Strengthen systems for perioperative care of children, including anesthesia, critical care, and nutrition.
- Develop and implement clinical protocols, safety standards, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support multidisciplinary care involving pediatrics, anesthesia, nursing, and allied health professionals.
- Strengthen referral systems and district-level capacity for pediatric surgical care.
- Participate in on-call coverage and emergency pediatric surgical services.
Research and Scholarship
- Initiate and support research in pediatric surgery, neonatal surgery, and global children’s surgery.
- Develop grant proposals, research publications, and technical reports.
- Mentor students and residents in research activities.
- Conduct implementation and operational research focused on improving access to pediatric surgical care in Rwanda and similar settings.
Center for Equity in Global Surgery (CEGS) Activities
- Participate in CEGS academic and administrative activities.
- Contribute to global surgery conferences, seminars, and collaborations.
- Build partnerships with national and international pediatric surgery programs.
- Support grant writing and resource mobilization.
- Advocate for equitable access to surgical care for children.
Institutional Service and Leadership
- Serve on UGHE committees as assigned.
- Contribute to departmental strategy and academic program development.
- Engage in community outreach and child health advocacy initiatives.
- Promote interprofessional education and collaboration.
- Perform other duties as assigned by UGHE leadership.
Qualifications and Skills
Mandatory
- Medical degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Postgraduate qualification in Pediatric Surgery (Fellowship, MMed, or equivalent recognized specialist qualification).
- Board certification or equivalent specialist recognition in Pediatric Surgery.
- Eligible for medical licensure/registration in Rwanda.
- Demonstrated clinical expertise in pediatric surgical care, including neonatal surgery.
- Experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
- Demonstrated research experience.
- Commitment to academic medicine and mentorship.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills in multidisciplinary settings.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Preferred
- MSc in Public Health, Global Health, or Medical Education.
- Experience in health systems strengthening and surgical capacity building in low-resource settings.
- Experience working in academic medical centers.
- Expertise in research methods and implementation science.
- Experience in competency-based medical education.
- Grant writing experience and peer-reviewed publications.
- Familiarity with COSECSA or similar regional training frameworks.

Position SummaryThe Biobank Technician II – Data Management and Cold Chain is responsible for maintaining accurate biobank information systems, managing specimen inventory records, monitoring storage conditions, and ensuring uninterrupted cold chain operations.The position ensures sample traceability, data integrity, specimen security, and compliance throughout the biobank lifecycle. The Technician also provides essential operational support to clinical trial activities by maintaining trial sample accountability records, supporting monitoring visits, and ensuring accurate documentation of research specimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate biobank and clinical trial sample databases, including inventory, location, processing, storage, transfers, and access history.
- Reconcile physical specimens with electronic records and resolve discrepancies.
- Track sample receipt, storage, retrieval, shipment, and chain of custody.
- Monitor cold-chain conditions, including −80°C freezers and liquid nitrogen systems, and respond to temperature excursions.
- Generate sample inventory and accountability reports and support audits, monitoring visits, and regulatory inspections.
- Maintain compliance with SOPs, protocols, ethics, data protection, and quality requirements, including CAPA.
- Maintain equipment, storage, and maintenance records and support contingency planning.
- Collaborate with laboratory, clinical, data, and research teams and support clinical trial start-up, monitoring, and close-out activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Informatics, Biomedical/Laboratory Sciences, Data Management, Biotechnology, IT, Life Sciences, or related field.
Experience:
- 2–3 years’ experience in biobank operations, laboratory data management, clinical research, or health information systems.
- Experience with databases, sample tracking, and electronic records.
- Data management, quality assurance, Excel/database systems, cold-chain monitoring, and research documentation.
- Preferred Training: GCP, GCLP, biobank, data management, or biosafety training.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, accountability, problem-solving, teamwork, and commitment to data quality.

The Biobank Technician I – Sample Processing is responsible for supporting the collection, receipt, processing, aliquoting, labeling, storage preparation, and quality control of biological specimens collected from clinical trials, population-based research studies, and other biomedical research projects.The position ensures that all biological samples are handled, processed, and stored according to approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), biosafety requirements, and biobank quality standards.The Biobank Technician I works closely with Clinical Research Coordinators, Principal Investigators, laboratory personnel, data management teams, and research partners to ensure specimen integrity, traceability, and compliance throughout the research lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, process, label, aliquot, store, retrieve, and prepare biological specimens for shipment according to approved SOPs.
- Maintain accurate sample identification, tracking, chain-of-custody, and inventory records.
- Conduct routine quality checks, document deviations, and support CAPA, audits, and continuous quality improvement.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, biosafety cabinets, refrigerators, freezers, and pipettes.
- Maintain biosafety, GCLP/GCP, confidentiality, and laboratory safety standards.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and report equipment or operational issues.
- Collaborate with clinical, laboratory, data management, and research teams to support clinical trials and research projects.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical/Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biotechnology, Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience, preferably involving human biological specimens in research, clinical trials, hospitals, or diagnostic laboratories.
- Skills: Knowledge of sample processing, biosafety, laboratory quality standards, documentation, and basic laboratory information systems; good computer skills.
- Preferred Training: GCLP, GCP, biosafety, and research ethics certification/training.

4. Biobank Head

Position Title: Biobank Head

Duty Station: UGHE-AVEGA Biobank and UGHE, Kigali. Frequent travel to the Butaro campus, Northern Province, Burera District, Rwanda
Contract Duration: Two (2) years, renewable based on performance
Position Summary
The Biobank Head provides strategic, scientific, technical, and operational leadership for the establishment and management of the UGHE-AVEGA Biobank, a core research infrastructure of the Institute of Global Health Equity Research (IGHER). The position is responsible for leading the planning, establishment, operationalization, accreditation, and continuous improvement of the biobank to support clinical trials, translational research, precision medicine, genomics, oncology, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and population health research.
The Head is responsible for the overall administration and day-to-day management of biobank operations, including biospecimen acquisition, processing, storage, inventory management, retrieval, distribution, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) administration, quality management systems, biosafety and biosecurity, regulatory compliance, equipment management, financial oversight, and supervision of biobank personnel.
Reporting to the Clinical research lead/Director of IGHER, the Biobank Head works closely with the Head of the UGHE-AVEGA Clinical Trial Unit to ensure seamless integration of biobanking services into all clinical trials and research activities conducted through UGHE. The position also collaborates closely with the Biobank Project Consultant (External Scientific Consultant) to establish the biobank according to international standards, develop governance structures, implement quality systems, strengthen institutional capacity, and position UGHE as a national and regional centre of excellence in biobanking.
The Biobank Head will play a pivotal leadership role in developing institutional policies, standard operating procedures, governance frameworks, regulatory systems, quality assurance programs, and strategic partnerships that ensure the biobank operates in accordance with ISBER Best Practices, ISO 20387, Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and all applicable national and international regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the establishment and operation of the UGHE–AVEGA Biobank and align activities with UGHE/IGHER priorities.
- Establish SOPs, Quality Management Systems, governance, and regulatory compliance, including preparation for ISO 20387 accreditation and ISBER Best Practices.
- Lead implementation and management of the LIMS and ensure secure, accurate, and traceable data management.
- Oversee biospecimen management, quality, traceability, security, staffing, equipment, budgets, and daily operations.
- Integrate biobanking with clinical trials and research programs and develop national and international collaborations.
- Build staff capacity through training, mentorship, and competency development in biobanking, GCP/GCLP, biosafety, and quality management.
Qualifications
Education
PhD (preferred) or Master’s in Biobanking, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biomedical/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Genomics, Public Health, Clinical Research, or related field. Certification in GCLP, GCP, ISO 20387, ISO 15189, ISBER Best Practices, or QMS/Laboratory Management is a plus.
Experience
- 8+ years in biobank management, biomedical research, clinical laboratory management, or clinical trial support, including 5+ years in senior leadership supervising multidisciplinary teams
- Proven track record establishing or expanding a biobank/biospecimen repository — infrastructure planning, workflow development, and operations
- Experience implementing LIMS and laboratory/biobank Quality Management Systems
- Hands-on management of biospecimen collection, processing, cryopreservation, storage, and distribution
- Equipment lifecycle management (procurement through calibration/maintenance)
- Experience managing donor-funded programs, budgets, and strategic/donor reporting
- Developed SOPs, quality manuals, and governance structures (Oversight/Scientific Advisory/Data Access Committees)
- Prepared labs for ISO 20387, ISO 15189, or ISBER accreditation; built CAPA and audit systems
- Prepared IRB/ethics/regulatory documentation; ensured compliance with biospecimen collection, storage, and export regulations
- Developed informed consent, data privacy, and biobank governance frameworks
- Supported regulatory inspections and audits
- Strong command of ISBER, ISO 20387/15189, GCLP/GCP, LIMS, and biosafety/QMS standards. Excellent leadership, project and financial management, and scientific writing/communication skills.
- Experience establishing a national/regional biobank; integrating biobanking into clinical trials; working with international institutions or in LMIC/Africa settings; PMP/PRINCE2 certification; strong publication and grant-management record.

Position Summary
The Biobank coordinator will provide operational, administrative, and research coordination support for biobank activities and clinical trial projects. The position will ensure effective planning, implementation, documentation, and monitoring of research activities while maintaining compliance with institutional policies, ethical requirements, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and biobank quality standards.
The Coordinator will serve as a key liaison between investigators, clinical trial teams, laboratory personnel, research participants, regulatory bodies, and collaborating institutions. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, experience in research administration, and the ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily biobank operations, including specimen collection, processing, storage, tracking, inventory, access, documentation, and compliance.
- Support clinical trial implementation, including timelines, regulatory documentation, site coordination, monitoring visits, recruitment tracking, essential documents, and logistics.
- Coordinate research activities, work plans, meetings, reports, budgets, procurement, travel, and project documentation.
- Ensure adherence to GCP, ethics and regulatory requirements, biobank policies, data protection, and support audits and accreditation activities.
- Serve as a coordination point among investigators, clinical teams, laboratory/biobank staff, sponsors, regulators, and research partners, ensuring effective communication and follow-up.
Required Qualifications and competence
- Bachelor’s degree in Health/Biomedical/Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, Clinical Research, Life Sciences, Health Administration, or related field; Master’s degree is an advantage.
- Experience: 3–5 years’ experience in clinical research, clinical trials, biobanking, laboratory research, or research administration.
- Experience with research documentation, databases, regulatory/ethics submissions, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of ICH-GCP, biobank operations, sample management, and research compliance.
- Experience with REDCap, CTMS, LIMS, or similar research data systems is an advantage.
- Strong organizational, coordination, communication, documentation, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to manage confidential research information.
- GCP, research ethics, clinical research, biobank, or data management certification is an advantage.
- Ability to coordinate multiple activities, maintain accurate records, meet deadlines, and support clinical trials, audits, reporting, and research logistics.

Organizational Profile
UGHE is a new kind of university focused on training the next generation of global leaders in health care delivery. The university launched in Rwanda in September 2015. Through an academic experience uniquely rooted in the values of equity, students are empowered to both ease suffering at the bedside and drive transformational, systemic changes to the health system.
UGHE is an initiative of Partners In Health (PIH), an internationally recognized non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. In over nearly three decades of operating alongside public sectors in countries around the world, PIH has developed a model to deliver high quality healthcare to some of the world’s most marginalized communities. Nowhere has this impact been more profound than in Rwanda, where Inshuti Mu Buzima—PIH’s sister organization—and our government partners have driven innovation for a decade.

A range of pre-employment checks will be undertaken in conformity with UGHE’s policy.
