The Offsider / Drill Assistant reports to the Drill Rig Operator or Senior Driller.
Job summary / Overview
The Offsider / Drill Assistant supports the drilling team by assisting with the operation, setup, and breakdown of drill rigs and equipment to ensure efficient drilling activities. S/he handles tools, materials, and rods, performs routine maintenance, and cleans the drill site, all while adhering to strict safety protocols. With more experience than a trainee, they take on operational tasks independently under supervision. Additionally, s/he assists with core sample handling, ensures consumables are available, and provides secretarial support, including preparing presentations for management and engineering meetings. This role demands physical fitness, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and productive worksite.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Rig Setup and Maintenance: Assist with assembling, dismantling, relocating, and maintaining drilling rigs, tools, and equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
- Handling Tools and Equipment: Safely handle, prepare, and organize drill rods, core barrels, pipes, casings, and consumables for drilling operations.
- Core Sample Management: Retrieve, label, and preserve core samples for analysis, maintaining detailed geological records.
- Operational Monitoring and Support: Monitor drilling performance metrics (e.g., ROP, pump pressure, torque, WOB) and assist with equipment adjustments, troubleshooting, and mud pump operations.
- Site Maintenance and Safety: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe drill site by following safety protocols, removing debris, and participating in drills and training.
- Physical Tasks: Perform heavy lifting, operate in varying weather and terrain, and assist with raising/lowering casings and drill pipes.
- Compliance and Reporting: Complete drilling paperwork, monitor compliance with policies and regulations, and report concerns or improvements to senior staff.
- Equipment Servicing: Collaborate on maintenance and repairs of pumps, rigs, and machinery to ensure operational efficiency.
Required Education, Work experience, Qualities and Skills
- Minimum having a High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED).
- Vocational training or certifications in drilling, mining, or heavy equipment operation (preferred but not mandatory).
- Certification in First Aid, CPR, or workplace safety (preferred).
- Previous experience in mining, drilling, construction, or a related physical labor environment (preferred but not mandatorily required).
- Experience handling heavy machinery, tools, or working in remote environments is an advantage.

- Attention to Detail:Accurate labeling, handling, and documentation of core samples.
- Communication Skills:Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with team members.
- Problem-Solving:Quick response to unexpected challenges, such as equipment malfunctions or environmental obstacles.
- Valid driver’s license, particularly B, C or D for heavy vehicles (preferred).
- Willingness to undergo safety and technical training specific to the drilling operation.
