They use tools like rock saws and core splitters to cut, bag, and tag samples for laboratory analysis while maintaining sample integrity and detailed records. This role ensures geologists can effectively analyze subsurface materials for minerals, metals, and rock formations, supporting informed decisions about project feasibility. Working closely with drilling and geology teams, the Core Writer/Marker ensures compliance with industry standards and company protocols.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
Core Handling and Preparation:
- Receive and transport core samples from the drill rig to designated areas.
- Split cores using tools like diamond saws or manual splitters.
- Bag, tag, and organize samples for laboratory analysis.
- Use equipment such as skid steers or pallet jacks to move pallets of core samples.
Marking and Labeling:
- Mark cores with depth intervals, orientation lines, and continuous labels, including full and half-meter measurements.
- Ensure markings are clear, legible, and securely placed to prevent data loss.
Core Drilling and Material Analysis:
- Operate core drilling tools to create precise cuts or extract subsurface materials.
- Assist in evaluating the density, composition, and strength of materials, particularly fine-grained, stone-free soils.
Documentation and Quality Control:
- Log detailed information about core samples, including depth, orientation, and observations, into records or digital systems.
- Maintain sample integrity during handling, storage, and transport.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any sample discrepancies or issues.
Collaboration and Support:
