Advert – Communications Officer

About the Role:

Save the Children (SC) is the world’s largest independent child rights organization, underpinned by a vision of a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation. Our mission to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children, and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives.

The Communications Officer will work with the SBCC Specialist in supporting the development of all programmatic communication materials for project activities, coordinating events, and ensuring appropriate visibility of the project. S/he will also support the SBCC Specialist in liaising with local media outlets in order to raise awareness for the project and its impact.


Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or journalism or another related field.
  • Experience of at least two years in working with NGOs in communications.
  • Familiarity with digital and social media.
  • An initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to manage and prioritise an unpredictable workload and solve problems quickly with minimum support.
  • Experience in CMS (Content Management System), preferably Drupal.
  • Proven experience in using social media.
  • Familiarity with off-set and digital printing.
  • Ability to shoot quality videos and photographs.
  • Ability to use Adobe software preferably Photoshop, Premiere, After Effect, InDesign and illustrator.
  • Excellent IT skills, especially in Microsoft Office and digital editing software especially Adobe InDesign.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent English and Ikinyarwanda language writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent communications and relationship building skills with children in order to gather good case studies and other related content.
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong working computer skills and proficiency with MS Word, Spreadsheet, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Project, and comfort with learning new applications as required.
  • Familiarity with current web-based tools, apps, and IT platforms.
  • High-level interpersonal skills, as well as stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work well in a culturally diverse and team-based environment.
  • Motivation to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Must be flexible, innovative, proactive, to work under tight deadlines.
  • Maturity, professionalism, positive attitude.
  • Commitment to Save the Children’s mission and values.
  • Initiative, flexibility and ability to work independently as well as in a team.

CHILD SAFEGUARDING:

This position is on Child Safeguarding- Level 3:  The post holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs. Or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.
