JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose of the position:
Reporting to the Director of the Program on Social and Economic Rights (POSER), The Agribusiness Manager will provide leadership and technical support to services delivered under the PIH/IMB Program on Social and Economic Rights to addresses the social inequalities that put patients at increased risk of disease.
The Agribusiness Manager will be responsible for providing coaching services on agribusiness ideas and development of business plans for program beneficiaries. S/He will play a major role in advising the annual planning and budgeting processes of agribusiness and off-farm job creation and ensure that program deliverables are met. S/He will be responsible for beneficiary capacity building, increased agricultural production and linking them to markets after harvesting. The Agribusiness Manager will work closely with POSER staff based in Districts and community members to build effective partnership in implementation of program interventions. S/He will also ensure cross-site collaboration and harmonization of interventions across PIH/ IMB’s catchment areas. This is a cross-site position based at Rwinkwavu with frequent travel to Burera, and Kirehe Districts.
The major responsibilities include:
- Advise the annual planning and budgeting processes for agribusiness and job creation related activities and ensure that program deliverables are met;
- Work with POSER Director to initiate and develop programs interventions that emphasize on Off-farm jobs creation;
- Support District based livelihood team in promotion of small and medium enterprises for household income generation;
- Provide timely monthly, quarterly and annual qualitative and quantitative reports on indicators in POSER and activity progress,
- Provide support to district based POSER staff on impact documentations and share best practices
- Monitor the use of resources allocated to POSER programs and play an analytical role in cost benefit analysis of inputs provided to program beneficiaries,
- Build the capacity of POSER beneficiaries groups and cooperatives in entrepreneurship and financial literacy for income generation
- Lead the development of business plans, link trained POSER cooperatives to SACCOs, MFIs, BDF and other financial service providers for accessing loan.
- Assess the availability of good markets for products of POSER beneficiaries and serve as a link to those markets;
- Provide coaching services on innovative agribusiness ideas and best practices to program beneficiaries;
- Collaborate with M&E team members to capture program data, success stories, lessons learned, and best practices of program interventions.
- Stimulate good business linkages of POSER beneficiary cooperatives to the potential business partners; service providers, financial services, and market (contract farming).
- Provide continuous mentorship to the existing VSLAs and facilitate them to graduate to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises
- Provide support to POSER staff in assessment of training needs of program beneficiaries. Collaborate with district based team members to and conduct the requires to beneficiaries
- Asses and evaluate the readiness of program beneficiaries to graduate following the set graduation criteria
Required Qualifications
- Five years’ experience with a Master’s degree in Agribusiness, and Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Rural Development or closely related field;
- Previous experience working with producer organizations and smallholder farmers along the agricultural value chain for an international NGOs is preferred;
- Proven experience in designing, planning and budgeting processes and implementation agribusiness projects for income generation;
- Good understanding of rural development and health needs and experience in providing creative solutions to related challenges;
- Experience in coaching and training community beneficiaries on innovative agribusiness ideas and best practices to improve their livelihoods;
- Strong interpersonal skills including ability to communicate effectively with people individually and in groups, and the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical colleagues;
- Proven ability to mentor, advise and coach professional staff that are not direct reports;
- Advanced Professional English skills, written and oral. Conversational fluency in Kinyarwanda highly desired, and professional fluency in French is an added advantage.
- Appreciation and understanding of socio-cultural, health and development issues, trends and challenges in Rwanda.
